In Chemistry, there is a principle called Boyle’s Law. It states that the pressure of a gas is inversely proportional to its volume when temperature is held constant. To simplify, it means that the greater the pressure, the smaller the volume, and the lesser the pressure, the greater the volume. In other words, if you apply pressure to a gas, its volume will decrease because it cannot expand in space. But if you reduce the pressure on the gas, it will expand, growing in volume much more than expected.
This idea might apply to life as well. If you put too much pressure on an individual, they cannot grow in life, career, or society. This pressure can kill self-confidence and the ability to grow. Rather, giving freedom and not applying pressure is the best way to get the most out of someone.
A seed planted in soil needs free movement of air and water to grow into a plant. If the soil is pressed too hard, the seed will fail to germinate. Does this happen with human beings as well? Yes, it is a proven fact that a child needs encouragement and freedom to reach their full potential. When the burden of expectations is placed on a child, they often enter a state of non-performance. If they are asked to behave in a certain way, and this becomes a pressure, they may not be able to break free from that mold. Giving freedom and space is essential for a child’s growth.
This is also true for adults. In the workplace, if you want to get the best work from employees, give them room to maneuver. Allow them to operate in their own style. Rather than directing them for every small task and micromanaging them, it’s better to let them perform. Let them decide. Let them choose the method. When they don’t feel pressured, their performance will likely exceed expectations. The reason? The same law of Chemistry – if there is less pressure, the volume of gas increases due to the space and freedom.
How do you operate in your personal life? Do you take on too much pressure with every task in your personal, professional, and social life? Or do you allow your imagination, creativity, and freedom to decide how to live, work, and interact? If you are a stickler and do not allow yourself to explore the unknown sides of your own life, perhaps your growth is limited by the rules and limitations you’ve imposed on yourself. But if you give yourself freedom, your growth will be remarkable because it will occur in a conducive, low-pressure atmosphere.
